About The Giro di Burnaby
Giro
di Burnaby – July 17, 2008
On Friday evening, July
14th, 2006 the Giro di Burnaby, an event born from the idea of city
councilor Pietro Calendino, made its debut on the streets of the
Burnaby Heights Neighbourhood.
The event, named as a
tribute to Burnaby’s Italian community and to the world famous Giro
d’Italia (the second large stand richest cycling race in the world)
saw 63 men and 24 women finishing the inaugural race to a cheering
crowd of approximately 7,000 spectators.
In 2007, the Giro di
Burnaby officially became part of the well-established
BC Superweek
series (Tour de Delta, Tour de Gastown and Tour de White Rock) which
now presents 8 sizzling competitive cycle races over 10 hot days! The
2007 Giro di Burnaby saw the rider field double with 134 men and 56
women lining up to race to a crowd of over 10,000 spectators. This year
they will race for an amazing $15,000 prize purse!
The success of the Giro
di Burnaby is due to the incredible support of the title sponsors,
Embassy Development, Appia Development and Palladio Jewellers and the
continued involvement and support from other major sponsors, Lower
Mainland Steel, Newway Forming, Tourism Burnaby, and Supersave
Fencing.
Why Giro di Burnaby?
Giro di Burnaby means "Tour of Burnaby" in Italian and although not
quite as large as the Giro d’Italia (the second largest and richest
cycling race in the world) the Giro di Burnaby is just as exciting to
the Burnaby community
A Criterium is a race of several laps on a short circuit with the city
streets closed to traffic. The high-speed cornering and sprinting in
this event make it a favorite for spectators and provide an
opportunity to get close to the action as racers reach speeds of up to
60 km/hour.
